Synopsis

On Millennium Eve Jesus Maria injects a hotshot of heroin and dies. The two addicts who sold him the heroin, and who are with him at the time, try to revive him. Unsuccessful, they strip him of anything of any use or value he has ( money, phone, clothes, shoes) and dump his body in the street. Some time later Jesus comes around. He is  confused and naked (except his trouser) and ill through a combination of having shot toxic heroin and from having touched death.  He is in a weird kind of animalistic, trance-like state where nothing makes much  sense. He's not sure who he is or what has happened, but he retains a cognitive map of home and an instinct to get there. He staggers home, feet bleeding, vomiting, through the last of the celebrating millennium crowds. From the state of him the revellers think he has had an ultra good night of it. They jostle him, blow party hooters in his face, slap him on the back. When Jesus finally arrives home he climbs into bed in his trousers and falls unconscious. When he next wakes up he is deathly ill through junk sickness. The rest of the book relates his ten days of sickness in which Jesus  has a kind of cleansing of the soul and body. Through a series of dreams, hallucinations, memories and flashbacks  he relives his life and times...
